DayMaker Spotlight: Kay Wesnes

  • News

At On Verve, we celebrate the unique journeys of our DayMakers, each bringing their own strengths and experiences to the team. As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, we’re highlighting the inspiring career journeys of our DayMakers. Today, we’re sharing the story of Kay Wesnes, a Coordinator whose path has been defined by empowerment, resilience, and staying true to herself. From navigating motherhood while growing her career to finding inspiration in powerful female role models, Kay’s journey is one of determination and passion.

Finding empowerment in a female-led space

Walking into On Verve for the first time, Kay felt something different. The company’s culture, energy, and leadership immediately stood out, but what struck her the most was seeing women in key leadership roles.

“It was empowering to see a company predominantly run by women, with our Chief DayMaker being a woman,” she recalls. In an industry where leadership is often male-dominated, seeing women leading and thriving was both inspiring and motivating.

That sense of empowerment has only grown since she joined the team. “It makes me proud to be part of a company where I can express my strengths and contribute without feeling less as a woman. The culture here is forward-thinking and supportive and it’s given me the space to grow both personally and professionally.”

Balancing career and motherhood

For Kay, success isn’t just about career milestones, it’s about finding balance. Becoming a working mum has been both one of her biggest challenges and greatest achievements.

“Managing both responsibilities has taught me so much about time management, resilience and prioritisation. It’s been tough, but also incredibly rewarding to prove to myself that it’s possible to excel in both my career and as a parent,” she shares.

But like many working mums, mum guilt is real. “Some days are harder than others, but I’m learning to trust the process. Every day is a new challenge, but I embrace it, knowing that both my career and my family can thrive.”

Through it all, she carries the words of her late mother as a reminder of her strength: ‘You can do anything if you put your mind to it.’

Own your power

If Kay could give one piece of advice to women looking to enter or grow in guest services, it would be this: never be afraid to stand in your power.

“We as women are incredibly powerful and deserve to take up space, especially in leadership roles,” she says. “Trust in your abilities, don’t shy away from challenges, and always advocate for yourself.”

Confidence and resilience are key in this industry but so is embracing what makes you unique.

“I love that On Verve celebrates individuality. They allow us to hone in on our talents and strengths, rather than trying to fit us into a box. That’s what gives us the confidence to excel as our true selves.”

What International Women’s Day means to her

This year, International Women’s Day carries an even deeper meaning for Kay. She recently became a mum while also navigating the loss of both her grandmother and mother. It’s been a time of reflection, growth, and finding strength in the legacy of the women before her.

“Losing the women who were closest to me has been an emotional journey, but it also reminds me of how they shaped me. They instilled in me strength and resilience, and that’s something I carry with me every day.”

For Kay, women are the backbone of families, communities, and industries.

“The challenges we face only make us stronger. It’s a reminder that we truly run the world in so many ways.”

Looking back at history, she recognises how far women have come, especially in the UK, where women fought for equal voting rights in 1928. But there’s still work to be done.

“We’ve made huge strides, but we’re still breaking barriers, shattering ceilings, and proving we belong in every room and leadership position.”

International Women’s Day is also a chance for her to celebrate the incredible women around her. “My female friends are a constant support. We lift each other up, get through tough times together and cheer each other on.”

One of her favourite quotes captures it perfectly:

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”

Finding inspiration in Alicia Keys

When it comes to female role models, Kay has been inspired by Alicia Keys for most of her life. She first came across her music at 12 years old and instantly connected, not just with the songs, but with the woman behind them.

“What I admire most is how Alicia navigated her career with authenticity,” Kay explains. “She refused to conform to the industry’s expectations of women. At a time when female artists were often pressured to be sexualised, she broke the mould.”

Instead of playing along, Alicia stood her ground. When her record label pushed her to change her image to sell more records, she chose to switch labels instead.

“She stayed true to her artistic vision, and that takes courage. That’s had a huge impact on me, and it’s something I try to carry with me, staying true to who I am.”

If Kay could choose one anthem for International Women’s Day, there’s no question what it would be: Superwoman – Alicia Keys.

Embracing growth and new challenges

Kay’s journey is a testament to resilience, empowerment and embracing the challenges that come her way. From balancing career and motherhood to championing women in leadership, she is proof that women can do it all and that success doesn’t have to mean sacrificing what matters most. As she looks ahead, one thing is clear: her journey is just beginning.
